Don't know whether or not this is common knowledge, so i figured i'd post it. It worked for me for ffx on the ps2, and just again recently with this ps3 remaster version. Only problem is It is easy to get to, even though the minimap doesn't show it as existing. To get to the spot from when you enter the Sunken Cave, follow the path until it dead ends and lets you go west or east. Go east, and go all the way to the alcove at the end of the green room.
Just against the back wall in this little alcove and run back and forth. I recorded my encounters this time when i went to get my 10 captures of Tonberry, and here is my tally: Tonberry - 10 Coeurl x2 - 3 Malboro - 5 Magic Urn - 32 Defender - 1 Ghost - 2 Valaha and Epaaj - 4 My characters were hitting for 9, with the taming weapons, so it went pretty fast.
If anyone else wants to try it out and post their results for this spot as well, you are more than welcome to do so : You were lucky. The encounter rate there is no different than any other spot in the cave you can find Tonberries. Unless you went and got into around 10, battles and recorded every one of them, you don't have enough data to properly compile a true reflection of the overall rates.
